Compensation:

Position Summary & Responsibilities:

Location: KDA Headquarters - Riley, County Kansas

The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) is accepting applications to fill a Part-Time Legal Assistant position within our Legal Section. KDA’s purpose is to serve, promote and grow the state’s largest industry. We are an agency that focuses on creating a best-in-state plus workforce that is diligent about innovation and efficiency in our duties and customer service.

The Legal Section assists the various KDA programs as they regulate a wide variety of sectors, including water use, conservation, pesticide, fertilizer, food safety, lodging, weights and measures, plants, weeds, seeds, dairy, animal health, agricultural promotion and marketing, and meat and poultry inspections. The Legal Section also provides general support to the agency.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Drafting and preparing administrative orders, exhibits, other legal documents, correspondence, and internal agency reports and policy and procedure documents.

  • Filing documents in legal cases, maintaining physical and electronic legal files, calendaring and tracking deadlines, and ensuring telephone coverage within the legal division.

  • Scheduling and coordinating in-person and virtual meetings, conferences, and agency hearings, including coordinating related travel plans and facilities reservations.

  • Handling constituent information requests in a manner that is responsive while recognizing the sensitive/confidential nature of administrative investigations.

  • Responding to special initiatives or assignments as needs arise and performing various other duties as assigned by supervisor.


Minimum Requirements

  • Professionally minded individuals with a least one year of experience in general office, clerical and administrative support work in a setting such as a law firm, attorney office, district court, or regulatory agency or other government office.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing and have basic knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to calmly deal with difficult situations and people.

Preferred Requirements (Not Required)

  • At least three years of experience working with attorneys or in a similiar legal setting.
  • Familiarity with legal proceedings, electronic filing systems, and assisting attorneys in preparing documents for various adminstrative and court proceedings.
