For the August 2026 through June 2027 testing cycle, the LSAT costs $253, and that fee includes LSAT Argumentative Writing.
The Credential Assembly Service (CAS) is another $219, and each law school report costs $45.
Here is the fee sheet, the optional add-ons that can raise the bill, and how the LSAC fee waiver tiers handle retakes.
How much is the LSAT?
For the August 2026 through June 2027 testing cycle, the LSAT costs $253, and that fee includes LSAT Argumentative Writing — the writing part is not billed separately.
LSAC publishes the fee on its LSAT and CAS fee page.
If you are still sizing up the test itself before paying, our guide to what the LSAT is covers the format and how scoring works.
The price is also flat across attempts: per LSAC, the LSAT costs the same for first-time and repeat test takers.
There is no discounted first sitting and no retake surcharge.
Optional services can also add to the bill.
Score Preview costs $46 if you sign up before the first day of testing for your administration, or $87 after testing, and it gives you six calendar days after score release to cancel your score.
Moving your test date is free through the registration deadline, $153 up to 7 days after it, and $253 from 8 days after the deadline until testing.

What is CAS and what does it cost?
CAS is the Credential Assembly Service, LSAC's service for law school applicants.
On the fee page it sits beside the test as its own line item: CAS costs $219 for the 2026–27 cycle, separate from the $253 LSAT fee — two charges, not one combined price.
Sending your results to schools is billed per report.
Each CAS Law School Report or LSAT-Only Law School Report costs $45, the same price for either type.
Because reports are billed individually, the length of your school list is itself a cost decision: the report total moves with every school you add.
One limit to flag: our research captured CAS's pricing, not its mechanics.
The pages we read list the fees; they do not break down what CAS assembles or sends for each application.
Check LSAC's CAS pages for what the service includes in your application cycle before you register.
Who qualifies for a fee waiver?
LSAC's fee waiver program comes in tiers, and the tier sets the retake rule.
A Tier 1 waiver covers up to two LSATs taken within the two-year waiver period, so a retake inside that window is covered.
A Tier 2 waiver does not include a retake.
As for who qualifies: that is LSAC's determination, made through its fee waiver application.
The pages we researched record what each tier covers once it is approved — not the eligibility criteria LSAC applies — so we won't guess at them here.
If the fees are the barrier, check LSAC's own fee waiver pages for the current eligibility rules and the application.
What does applying to law school cost overall?
On the LSAT side of an application budget, your two cost levers are how many times you sit and how many schools get a report.
Every sitting in the 2026–27 cycle costs $253 — repeat takers pay exactly what first-timers pay — and you can take the LSAT up to five times within the current reportable score period (the one running since July 2021) and seven times over a lifetime.
Each CAS Law School Report or LSAT-Only Law School Report adds $45, on top of the $219 CAS fee.
The add-ons cost money only when you use them: Score Preview at $46 or $87, a date change at $153 or $253.
The other lines are charged per use — the test per sitting, reports per school — with CAS its own line item, so no single number covers every applicant.
This page stops at the admission-test fees.
Tuition, living costs, bar prep and bar admission are the rest of the budget, and the guide to the total cost to become a lawyer stacks the whole thing from test day to bar card.
