How much does it cost to become a lawyer?

The fixed, published fees are the small part — $253 for the LSAT and $219 for the CAS in the 2026–27 cycle, $185 for the MPRE near the end.

Tuition is the number that decides the total: median full-time resident tuition was about $49,910 a year in the ABA's 2025 data.

This page totals every stage — and flags the numbers only each school or admitting authority can quote.

What's the total cost to become a lawyer, start to finish?

The pathway has two kinds of costs: fixed fees you pay once per stage, and tuition — the annual bill that dwarfs everything else.

The LSAC and NCBE fees are small and published, bar application fees are set by each jurisdiction, and tuition is school-specific and charged every year of enrollment.

Here are the line items with their current published amounts.

StagePublished cost
LSAT registration, August 2026–June 2027 (includes LSAT Argumentative Writing)$253
Credential Assembly Service (CAS)$219
Each CAS Law School Report or LSAT-Only Law School Report$45
LSAT Score Preview (optional)$46 before the first test day; $87 after testing
Law school tuition, full-time (2025 ABA data)median about $49,910/yr resident; range about $11,338–$85,368; nonresident median about $53,640
MPRE, all 2026 and 2027 administrations$185
NextGen bar exam software/technology fee$149, on top of the jurisdiction's application fee
Bar exam application feeset by each jurisdiction's admitting authority — state-by-state bar exam fees
Bar prep courseset by each provider; no verified national figure — how to choose a bar exam prep course
USPTO patent bar (optional, for patent practice)$118 application + $226 exam + $221 Prometric; $226 registration after passing

Tuition is the line that multiplies.

Most JD programs are three-year, full-time programs; part-time programs take about four years.

At the median rate, that is three years of tuition at your school's annual figure before fees, living costs or any scholarship.

Two rows have no verified number on this page on purpose.

Bar exam application fees are set jurisdiction by jurisdiction — each jurisdiction charges its own application fee — and bar prep course pricing is set by each provider.

Both are real costs; the links in the table track them.

Why there is no single total here

The verified numbers on this page are the fixed fees and the tuition medians. The all-in figure depends on which school you attend, its cost of attendance, the city you live in and the aid you are offered. Treat the table as the line items, and price your own shortlist school by school.

Pre-law costs: the LSAT, CAS and law school applications

Before anyone is a law student, the admission process charges its own fees, all set by LSAC.

For the August 2026–June 2027 cycle, the LSAT costs $253, and that fee includes LSAT Argumentative Writing.

The Credential Assembly Service (CAS) costs $219, and each CAS Law School Report or LSAT-Only Law School Report costs $45 — the per-school charge that scales with how long you make your application list.

Retakes are priced the same as a first attempt: the LSAT costs the same for first-time and repeat takers.

LSAC caps retakes at five within the current reportable score period and seven over a lifetime, so a repeat attempt is a budget line, not an unlimited option.

Schedule changes have their own price.

Changing test dates is free through the registration deadline, $153 up to 7 days after it, and $253 from 8 days after the deadline until testing.

Score Preview — which gives you six calendar days after score release to cancel a score — costs $46 before the first test day or $87 after testing.

Law school tuition and living costs

Tuition is the number the whole budget turns on.

In the ABA's 2025 Standard 509 data, median full-time resident tuition at ABA-approved law schools was about $49,910 a year, ranging from about $11,338 to $85,368; median full-time nonresident tuition was about $53,640.

These are the tuition rates schools report to the ABA, they exclude fees and living costs, and private schools report the same figure for residents and nonresidents.

Time multiplies the bill: most JD programs are three years full-time, and part-time programs take about four.

Living costs — rent, food, travel — sit on top of tuition and are not in any of these figures; they depend on the school's city.

The per-school breakdown is its own topic: law school tuition and cost of attendance covers it school by school.

What graduates actually borrow gives the financing side of the same picture.

Per the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard, the median federal loan debt at graduation for law programs was about $105,900 — federal loans only, excluding private loans and any undergraduate debt — with school medians ranging from about $45,200 to $229,700.

The borrowing detail is its own topic too: average law school debt.

Bar prep and bar admission fees

The end stage has its own fee stack.

The MPRE — NCBE's Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination — costs $185 for all 2026 and 2027 administrations, paid to Pearson.

It is required for bar admission in every U.S. jurisdiction except Wisconsin and Puerto Rico, and Connecticut and New Jersey accept a law-school professional responsibility course instead of a passing MPRE score.

Rescheduling within a window costs $25 and there is no separate late fee; sending a score to an additional jurisdiction costs $30 per MPRE Score Report.

The bar exam itself is priced jurisdiction by jurisdiction: each jurisdiction charges its own application fee, and NextGen examinees also pay a $149 exam software/technology fee through their NCBE Account, on top of the jurisdiction's application fee.

The current numbers are tracked state by state on our bar exam cost page.

Bar prep is the line item this page will not put a number on.

Course pricing is set by each provider, and the research behind this page found no typical price worth quoting — check current prices with providers directly.

The course decision itself is covered in how to choose a bar exam prep course.

One optional extra, for a patent practice: the USPTO's registration examination — the patent bar — sits outside the standard pathway.

Its fees are $118 for the USPTO application (non-refundable), $226 for the examination, $221 for Prometric's administration, and a $226 registration fee after passing; the application fee rises to $1,806 if moral character issues are disclosed.

Fees change

The exam fees on this page are as published for the August 2026–June 2027 LSAT cycle and the 2026–2027 MPRE administrations; tuition figures are the ABA's 2025 data. Confirm current amounts with LSAC, NCBE, the USPTO and the bar admission authority in your state before you pay anything.

How people cut the bill: scholarships, fee waivers and part-time study

Scholarships act on the biggest line item in the budget: tuition.

The LSAC and NCBE fees quoted on this page — the LSAT, CAS, school reports, Score Preview, MPRE and, for NextGen examinees, the software fee — run from $45 to $253; the bar application fee is separate and set by each jurisdiction.

Tuition repeats every year, so the aid that shrinks tuition moves the total most.

How scholarships are awarded, negotiated and kept is its own topic: law school scholarships.

The pre-law stage has its own relief valve.

An LSAC Tier 1 fee waiver covers up to two LSATs in the two-year waiver period; a Tier 2 waiver does not include a retake.

Part-time study is the other structural choice.

Eighty-six of the 196 ABA schools reported part-time first-year students in fall 2025, and a part-time JD takes about four years instead of three — a schedule that leaves room for paid work, at the cost of a fourth year of tuition and living costs.

The financing rules changed on July 1, 2026: graduate and professional students, law students included, may not take out new Grad PLUS loans — except students already enrolled on June 30, 2026 with a Direct Loan for that program, during their expected time to credential.

What that means for funding the rest of the bill is its own topic: how to pay for law school.

School choice does the rest.

Full-time resident tuition runs from about $11,338 to $85,368 a year across ABA-approved schools — a spread wide enough that the same JD carries very different price tags, which is why the decision matters more to the total than any fee on this page.

Career information, not legal or financial advice. Fees above are as published for the 2026–27 testing cycles; tuition figures are 2025 data. Confirm current fees with LSAC, NCBE, the USPTO and the bar admission authority in your state before you rely on them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you pay the LSAT fee again for every retake?

Yes.

LSAC charges the same fee to first-time and repeat takers — $253 for the August 2026–June 2027 cycle — and caps retakes at five within the current reportable score period and seven over a lifetime.

If your first score may not be where you need it, a second $253 registration is a realistic budget line.

Are LSAT and CAS fees separate?

They are.

LSAC's fee schedule lists the LSAT at $253 (including LSAT Argumentative Writing) and the Credential Assembly Service at $219 as separate charges, and each CAS Law School Report or LSAT-Only Law School Report sent to a school adds $45.

One LSAT fee covers one administration; the CAS fee and the per-school reports are the application-stage costs.

What is the biggest single cost of becoming a lawyer?

Tuition, by a wide margin.

Median full-time resident tuition was about $49,910 a year in the ABA's 2025 data, repeated across a three-year full-time program, while the LSAC and NCBE fees run from $45 per school report to $253 for the LSAT, with $185 for the MPRE.

The bar application fee is separate and set by each jurisdiction — see the state-by-state bar exam cost page.

School choice and scholarships move the total more than any fee does.

How much does the patent bar cost?

The USPTO registration examination costs $118 for the application (non-refundable), $226 for the examination and $221 for Prometric's administration, with a $226 registration fee due after passing.

It sits outside the standard pathway — it matters for patent practice — and the application fee rises to $1,806 if moral character issues are disclosed.
