How were these legal job boards ranked?
The ranking is by fit for a law firm filling a seat, not by size.
Four things decided each board's place: whether the audience is legal rather than general, which roles the board actually covers, how the pay model works (a flat one-time price, a click budget, a subscription or a rental slot), and whether the price is published or set by a quote engine.
Every competitor fact below was checked on that company's own website in October 2026, and LawFirmHires' facts come from its fact sheet and pricing page.
Ranked, best fit first:
- LawFirmHires — legal-only, attorneys and staff, $199 one-time per post at launch pricing.
- Indeed — the reach play: free organic posts within limits, sponsored budgets set by its recommendation system.
- LinkedIn — employed, passively looking attorneys; pay-per-click promotion or a free post.
- ZipRecruiter — a free start and self-reported distribution to 100+ job sites with one click.
- Lawjobs.com — ALM's legal board, $695–$1,299 per package.
- LawCrossing — free posting, plus slot plans by subscription ($699 a month buys 10 sponsored slots).
- iHireLegal — legal-only job slots, $369 a month for one on monthly terms (less on quarterly).
- Above the Law — a $200, 45-day listing in front of a legal readership.
- ABA Career Center — a national bar audience; its 30-day Job Flash package is $649 for members ($739 non-member).
- Texas Bar Career Center — the state-bar example: a $649, 30-day Job Flash the center emails to 93,000 Texas legal professionals (self-reported).
- ALA Job Board — legal management staff, $330 for members for 30 days.
- NALS Career Center — legal support staff, $399 for members for 30 days ($499 non-member).
- NALA Career Center — paralegal roles, free if NALA approves the posting.
- Hire an Esquire — contract, fractional and permanent attorney postings, $250 each.
- PSJD — public interest openings, free.
- NALP Job Center — a niche board for legal recruiting and career development staff, not paralegal roles.
- Robert Half — not a board: a staffing firm that sources talent for you.
What do the general job boards (Indeed, LinkedIn, ZipRecruiter) offer a law firm?
The general boards are where applicant volume is, and all three have a free way in.
Indeed lets many jobs post free, subject to its terms, conditions, quality standards and usage limits — though some jobs are sponsored only, and Indeed reserves the right to require sponsorship for any reason.
When you do sponsor, there is no fixed price: the Standard price is generated by Indeed's recommendation system from factors like job competitiveness, your hiring timeline and the supply of job seekers, with a minimum shown on the sponsorship page.
Its legal hiring pages (paralegal, lawyer, attorney, legal assistant, legal secretary) add a $75 sponsorship credit for new US accounts, which expires one year after account creation.
LinkedIn is the employed-candidate play.
Promoted posts are pay-per-click, charged only for clicks in the country where the job is posted and never more than the budget you set, and a free non-promoted post is still an option.
ZipRecruiter tells employers to try it free by creating a free account, and says a posted job “gets sent to 100+ job sites with one click” — a self-reported figure.
The trade is screening.
A general board brings every industry's applicants, so a paralegal opening sits in a mixed inbox; a legal-only board trades reach for relevance.
Which job boards are built only for legal jobs?
LawFirmHires is built for exactly this hiring.
It lists openings, mostly inside law firms, for associates, partners and of counsel and just as much for paralegals, legal assistants, legal secretaries, intake teams, receptionists, docketing, billing, eDiscovery and firm administration staff; in-house, government, prosecutor and public defender attorney roles are listed too.
A Standard post is $199 at launch pricing (regular $299) and a Featured post $399 (regular $499); both run 30 days, go live the moment payment goes through and are one-time payments with nothing to sign.
Applications go to the firm's own form or inbox — the board holds no candidate profiles or résumé database.
Firms with several openings can move to a slot plan: $899 a month for 10 live posts or $1,749 a month for 25, arranged by contact rather than checkout.
The pricing page and the fact sheet carry the detail.
Lawjobs.com is ALM's board — “As part of ALM, the Lawjobs.com global network directly reaches industry leaders who subscribe to our powerful brands,” its about page says, and its footer lists ALM titles from The American Lawyer to the National Law Journal.
Three per-job packages: High Visibility at $695 (30 days), Extended Reach at $795 (30 days plus a 2-week regional ALM eNewsletter ad) and Ultimate Reach at $1,299 (60 days plus print and eNewsletter ads, partner-network distribution and a search spotlight).
It fits when the ALM readership is the audience and a per-package budget is the model.
LawCrossing says it will never charge employers to post jobs, and its employer pricing page sells plans by subscription, tiered by the number of sponsored job slots — the Professional plan is $699 a month for 10 sponsored slots, and every plan starts with a 14-day free trial.
It fits a firm that posts continuously on a legal-only site.
iHireLegal rents job slots instead: $369 a month for one, $450 for three or $799 for ten on monthly terms, less on quarterly terms ($316, $405 and $733 a month), with openings swapped in and out of a slot as seats fill and a plan that can be upgraded, downgraded or canceled at any time.
Above the Law's job board is the one-off option: a Standard Listing is $200.00 and visible for 45 days, with a Featured option if you want more attention.
It fits a single opening you want in front of a legal readership without a subscription.
What do bar association job boards cost?
Bar boards put a posting in front of the bar association's own audience — national at the ABA, statewide in Texas — and both sell a Job Flash package: a job posted for 30 days that the center also emails to its list.
At the ABA Career Center the Job Flash package is $649 for ABA members and $739 for non-members; Premium Job Flash is $849/$969; and Ultimate Recruitment, which adds TalentBoost distribution and resume bank access, is $1,049/$1,199.
The center says its Job Flash emails reach 35,000+ legal professionals — a self-reported figure.
State bars are the local version, and Texas shows the model: the Texas Bar Career Center's page says prices start at $499, and its $649 Job Flash package is a job posted for 30 days that the center says it emails to 93,000 legal professionals in Texas (a self-reported figure); Premium Job Flash is $849; and Ultimate Recruitment, which adds TalentBoost distribution, is $1,049.
If you hire in another state, check whether your state bar runs a career center and what it currently charges.
Where should paralegal and legal staff jobs go?
Staff roles have their own association boards.
NALA's job bank is free — “There is no fee to list” — on two conditions: jobs must interest paralegals, and NALA reviews and approves each one before it posts, with the right to turn down submissions it considers unsuitable.
The ALA Job Board serves legal management careers: $330 for members for a Standard 30-day post, $540 Enhanced (featured job, blind-box posting) or $690 Premium (60 days, featured employer, increased reach, resume search), with non-member rates of $530, $740 and $890 and a 3-job Standard package at $790.
The NALS Career Center prices legal support postings at $399 for members and $499 for non-members for a 30-day Job Flash package — a listing the center says it emails to 2,700+ legal professionals — with Premium Job Flash at $499/$599 and Ultimate Recruitment at $699/$799.
One near-miss to know about: the NALP Job Center is not a paralegal board.
It describes itself as a resource for legal career professionals who advise law students, lawyers, law offices and law schools — its categories are attorney recruitment, attorney professional development, career development, HR and legal.
Post your recruiting or professional-development opening there; post the paralegal job on NALA or a legal-only board.
What about contract attorneys, public interest roles and staffing firms?
Hire an Esquire prices every attorney posting the same: $250 each, whether the job is contract, fractional or permanent, paid up front, with as many postings as you like, and Network Access to search its attorney network yourself is an additional $250.
It fits a firm staffing a matter — and the price is unchanged if the posting is for a permanent seat.
PSJD is the public interest option: public interest employers can create a profile and advertise job opportunities free, and the site has been maintained by NALP as one of its public service initiatives since 2003.
Robert Half is not a job board at all — it is a staffing firm whose legal practice provides contract and full-time attorney, paralegal and legal-support talent to law firms and corporations; its own promise is help hiring “often in as little as 48 hours.”
That is the outsource-the-search option, the opposite trade from posting and screening yourself.
And once you pick a board, the posting itself still has to earn the click: where to post law firm jobs covers the mechanics.
Which one should you choose?
Choose LawFirmHires if…
- You hire attorneys and staff — associates, paralegals, secretaries, intake, docketing, billing — and want them on one legal-only board instead of split across general sites.
- You want a flat one-time price per post ($199 Standard, $399 Featured at launch pricing), with no subscription and nothing to sign.
- You want the post live the moment you pay, with applications going to your own form or inbox.
- You are hiring for several seats at once and a monthly slot plan (10 or 25 live posts) beats paying per post.
Choose Indeed if…
- The role is hard to fill or high-volume and you want the widest applicant pool you can get, accepting that you will screen.
- You want to start free and sponsor selectively rather than pay for every post.
- You are hiring paralegals, legal secretaries, legal assistants, lawyers or attorneys and can use the $75 new-account sponsorship credit as a first test.
Choose LinkedIn if…
- The hire is senior or specialized, and the lawyers you want are employed and not searching job boards.
- You want click-level control: promoted posts are pay-per-click, charged only for clicks in the country the job is posted in.
- You want a free non-promoted post as the baseline and promotion as the optional extra.
Choose ZipRecruiter if…
- You want one posting distributed onward rather than managed on several sites — the 100+ site distribution is ZipRecruiter's own claim.
- You are testing online hiring for the first time and want to start on a free account.
Choose Lawjobs.com if…
- The opening targets readers of ALM's legal titles — The American Lawyer, the National Law Journal and their siblings.
- You want newsletter and print add-ons around the listing and a per-package budget of $695–$1,299.
Choose ABA Career Center if…
- Your firm or your hires are ABA members and the member rate applies ($649 vs $739 for the 30-day Job Flash package).
- You want a national bar-association audience for an attorney role.
Choose NALA Career Center if…
- The role is a paralegal one and you want a free listing in front of paralegals.
- You are fine with NALA reviewing and approving the posting before it goes up.
Choose Hire an Esquire if…
- You need contract or fractional attorney capacity for a matter — and the same $250 covers a permanent posting.
- You would rather pay $250 per posting than run a subscription.
Choose PSJD if…
- You are a public interest employer — a nonprofit or a government office.
- You want to advertise the opening for free.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best job board for hiring an attorney?
For a legal-only audience, LawFirmHires charges a flat $199 per post at launch pricing for 30-day listings across associate, practice-area, partner and staff roles, Lawjobs.com packages run $695–$1,299 for the ALM readership, and the ABA Career Center's 30-day Job Flash package is $649 for members ($739 for non-members).
For reach rather than focus, Indeed lets many jobs post free within its limits — though some are sponsored only — and LinkedIn has a free non-promoted post; both sell paid promotion.
Where can I post a legal job for free?
Five of the boards compared have a free way in: NALA's job bank charges nothing to list (paralegal-relevant roles, approved by NALA first); PSJD is free for public interest employers; Indeed lets many jobs post free within its limits, though some are sponsored only; and LinkedIn has a free non-promoted post.
LawCrossing also says it will never charge employers to post jobs.
How much does it cost to post a legal job?
Among the boards compared, a one-time post is either free (NALA and PSJD outright; free options also exist at Indeed, LinkedIn and LawCrossing) or runs $199–$1,299: LawFirmHires $199 at launch pricing or $399 Featured, Above the Law $200 for 45 days, Hire an Esquire $250, ALA $330, NALS $399 for members ($499 non-member), the ABA $649 for members ($739 non-member), the Texas bar $649 and Lawjobs.com $695–$1,299.
Slot and subscription models run from $316 a month (iHireLegal, one slot on a quarterly term) to $1,749 a month (LawFirmHires' 25-post Brand plan).
Is the NALP Job Center where I post a paralegal job?
No. The NALP Job Center is for legal career professionals — attorney recruitment, attorney professional development, career development, HR and legal roles — the people who run hiring, not the staff firms hire as paralegals.
A paralegal opening fits NALA's free job bank or a legal-only board like LawFirmHires.
Is Robert Half a legal job board?
No. Robert Half is a staffing firm: its legal page offers contract and full-time attorney, paralegal and legal-support talent for law firms and corporations, and says it can often help you hire in as little as 48 hours.
You pay for sourcing and screening rather than for a listing, which is the opposite trade from posting on a board.
Should a small firm pay to sponsor on Indeed?
It depends on the role.
Indeed lets many jobs post free, but some are sponsored only and Indeed can require sponsorship for any reason; there is no fixed price, since the Standard budget comes from its recommendation system.
New US accounts that post a job get a $75 sponsorship credit on its paralegal, lawyer, attorney, legal-assistant and legal-secretary hiring pages, which is a cheap way to test whether sponsorship is worth it.
Should I post on my state bar's job board?
If you are hiring in that state, it is worth pricing.
Texas shows the model: its $649 Job Flash package is a 30-day listing the center says it emails to 93,000 legal professionals in Texas (a self-reported figure), with Premium and Ultimate tiers at $849 and $1,049.
A bar board speaks to the bar association's own audience; check your state bar's career center for its current prices.
