Legal Navigation & Client Services Support

  • Conduct comprehensive immigration legal screenings to assess eligibility for immigration relief, benefits, and protections.
  • Support clients with document collection, application preparation, and follow-up case coordination under attorney supervision.
  • Assist in preparing applications such as N-400, I-90, I-130, VAWA, I-765, and other USCIS and EOIR forms under the supervision of the attorney supervisor

Community Engagement & Outreach

  • Support in the arrangement of Know-Your-Rights (KYR) presentations, self-help workshops, and legal education events across Brooklyn Community Districts 7, 11, 13, 14, and 15.
  • Represent COPO at local schools, libraries, mosques, and community centers for outreach and tabling efforts.
  • Help promote services during major annual community events (e.g., Pakistan Day Mela, Chand Raat).

Case Management & Social Services Integration

  • Assist clients with referrals to internal COPO programs (e.g., food pantry, Medicaid enrollment, senior services, ESOL classes).
  • Identify client needs beyond legal matters and provide appropriate warm handoffs to case managers or referral partners (e.g., CAMBA).
  • Maintain client confidentiality and ensure secure handling of sensitive personal data.

Administrative & Compliance Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate records using COPO’s legal case management system and submit requested data for biweekly and quarterly service reports to the supervising attorney
  • Attend all MOIA and COPO-mandated trainings and staff meetings.
  • Complete and maintain DOJ Partial or Full Accreditation (within 6 months of hire, supported by COPO).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate's degree in social work, political science, legal studies, or related field. Minimum 1 year of experience providing services to immigrants, preferably in legal or social services. Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights and social justice. Ability to work with clients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Proficiency in at least one high-need language: Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Arabic, Spanish, Uzbek, or Russian. Prior experience in immigration legal services, including screenings or form preparation. Knowledge of immigration law and NYC social service systems. Ability to lead outreach or education events in a second language. Paralegal certification preferred.
