Compensation: $24.00 - $28.00 / hour

Job Type: Full-time

About Us

Fok Immigration Law is a growing boutique law firm located in San Jose, dedicated exclusively to the practice of U.S. immigration law. We are a diverse, tight-knit group of individuals obsessed with providing the best immigration services possible.

We see our team as family. Collaboration, selfless support of one another, and equality are embedded in our culture. When you join us, you will be working with people who are fully committed to supporting you, trusting you, and relying on you.

If you are looking for a fun, collegial, and highly rewarding environment where you can have a direct and positive impact on our clients’ lives and careers, we want you on our team!

About the Position

We are seeking a full-time, on-site Entry-Level Immigration Legal Assistant to join our growing immigration law firm in San Jose. This position will primarily support EB-1 and EB-2 National Interest Waiver (NIW) petitions and is ideal for someone with strong writing and analytical skills, intellectual curiosity, and a genuine love of research.

Our EB-1 and NIW clients come from a wide range of professional backgrounds—from scientists and engineers to physicians, entrepreneurs, executives, researchers, and artists. Preparing their cases requires us to learn about what they do, understand the significance of their accomplishments, evaluate complex evidence, and present their qualifications in a clear and persuasive manner.

Prior immigration or legal experience is not required. We are happy to train someone who is a strong writer, a careful thinker, detail-oriented, curious, and eager to learn.

What You Will Be Doing

You will work closely with our attorneys and experienced legal team to prepare EB-1, NIW, and other employment-based immigration matters. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Writing and Drafting: Assist with drafting petition letters, recommendation letters, client statements, responses to government requests, and other case materials under attorney supervision.
  • Research and Case Analysis: Research clients’ fields and professional accomplishments and review evidence such as publications, citations, awards, media coverage, memberships, business achievements, and research contributions.
  • Evidence Development: Identify important facts, determine what additional evidence may be helpful, and assist in developing the strongest presentation of each case.
  • Document Review: Collect, review, organize, and track client documents while identifying missing information, inconsistencies, or issues requiring follow-up.
  • Client Communication: Communicate with clients by phone and email, ask follow-up questions, clarify information, and provide clear guidance regarding outstanding documents and case preparation.
  • Case Management: Maintain electronic case files, update case management software, monitor deadlines, and ensure case records are complete and accurate.
  • General Case Support: Assist attorneys and paralegals with immigration forms, correspondence, filing preparation, and other case-related tasks.

What We Are Looking For

Above all, we are looking for someone who likes to write, likes to think, and enjoys figuring things out.

You should be comfortable learning about subjects you may know nothing about at first—whether that means artificial intelligence, biomedical research, semiconductor technology, finance, entrepreneurship, or contemporary art—and then asking the right questions, identifying what matters, and explaining it clearly.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Excellent professional or academic writing skills.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking ability.
  • Excellent attention to detail, including the ability to identify inconsistencies, missing information, and factual discrepancies.
  • Strong research and reading-comprehension skills.
  • Ability to organize and synthesize information from multiple sources.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Adobe Acrobat, and learning new software and cloud-based systems.
  • Must be able to work full-time on-site at our San Jose office. This is not a remote position.
  • A great sense of humor. Yes, seriously—we work hard, but we also believe the workplace should be human and enjoyable.

Preferred Qualifications

The following are helpful, but not required:

  • 1–2 years of professional office, research, writing, client service, or similar work experience.
  • Prior experience in a law firm, professional services firm, academic or scientific research environment, journalism, publishing, communications, or another writing-intensive setting.
  • Experience preparing research papers, reports, proposals, grant applications, or other analytical written materials.
  • Interest in U.S. immigration law or the legal profession.
  • Experience handling confidential or sensitive information.
  • Bilingual ability is a plus.

We welcome candidates from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds. A traditional legal background is not necessary. Strong candidates may come from the humanities, social sciences, business, STEM, communications, research, or other fields where writing, research, and analytical thinking are important.
