No independent ranking we found backs the “best MPRE prep course” question: our research found no source that compares commercial bar-prep vendors or audits their pass rates.
So the searches — “Barbri MPRE”, “Themis MPRE prep”, “best MPRE prep course” — all land on the same decision: NCBE's free study aids, NCBE's own retired-question exams at $50 each, or a commercial course's structure.
For a two-hour, 60-question exam built on one published outline, free is a genuine option.
Free MPRE prep courses
Every option on this page aims at the same target: the MPRE, NCBE's two-hour, 60-question multiple-choice exam offered three times a year.
Our guide to the MPRE covers the format, scoring and who requires it.
The free tier starts with the organization that writes the exam.
NCBE publishes free MPRE sample test questions, a key words and phrases list and the full subject matter outline — the blueprint that assigns every tested topic a published weight range, with conflicts of interest the heaviest at 12–18%.
That outline is the blueprint the exam itself tests from.
The free sample questions are just that — a sample — so full-length practice is where NCBE's paid products begin.
What the commercial providers give away changes often, and our research did not collect it; their own MPRE pages are the current source for that.
Paid MPRE prep courses
The one paid product with published pricing in our research comes from NCBE itself: Simulated MPRE 1, 2 and 3, each a set of 60 retired MPRE questions with explanations, at $50 each or $125 for the bundle of three.
These are past exam questions, not imitations written to resemble one.
Beyond NCBE, the names you will compare — Barbri, Themis, Kaplan, Helix, UWorld, Quimbee and JD Advising — publish their own course designs, prices and schedules.
Those change often, and none of it was collected in our research, so treat this page as the comparison framework and each provider's site as the numbers.
What money buys here is delivery: a set schedule, lectures, someone else's judgment about what to emphasize, and question volume beyond the free samples.
The tested material is the exam's published outline either way — the same document NCBE gives away free.
No independent scoreboard exists
Which MPRE prep course is best for you?
Start from what the exam measures.
By NCBE's own description, the MPRE is not a test of personal ethical values — it measures knowledge of established standards of lawyer conduct.
That knowledge has a public, weighted outline, so coverage is checkable: whichever option gets you through that outline is covering the exam.
If you study well on your own, the free official package plus one or two of NCBE's $50 simulated exams covers the blueprint and puts real retired questions in front of you.
If you need external structure — deadlines, a calendar, lectures — that is precisely the commercial pitch.
Compare current prices and formats directly on the providers' sites — our research found no independently verified ranking of them.
Whichever route you pick, the brand on the box matters less than whether the material actually gets covered.
A written plan mapped to a chosen exam window does more work than any particular provider name.
How long do MPRE prep courses take?
Our research found no official benchmark: nothing from NCBE or any board of law examiners that we reviewed recommends a set number of study hours or a standard schedule, and MPRE course lengths are set provider by provider.
Check the syllabus of any course you are considering for its own timeline.
What is fixed is the exam's calendar.
The MPRE runs two hours and is offered three times a year; as of October 2026, NCBE posts these windows: November 12–13, 2026 (registration deadline September 17, 2026), March 23–24, 2027 (deadline January 21, 2027), August 18–19, 2027 (deadline June 17, 2027) and November 4–5, 2027 (deadline September 21, 2027).
Registration for the November 2026 window closed on September 17, 2026, and NCBE does not let you test in a window whose deadline you missed — so the first window open to a new registrant is March 23–24, 2027.
Scores are typically released within five weeks of the exam, in your NCBE Account.
That makes the registration deadline — not the course length — the real planning constraint: pick the window that fits your licensing timeline, confirm its deadline with NCBE, and back-plan your prep from there.
This page is career information, not legal advice. MPRE requirements are set jurisdiction by jurisdiction — confirm your jurisdiction's current requirement with its bar admission authority, and current course details with each provider.
