What Are the CLE Requirements for Utah Attorneys?

Founder, LawFirmHires
Last verified October 2026

Utah's active lawyers need 12 hours of accredited CLE every year.

The requirement runs on a one-year compliance cycle, July 1 through June 30, and each active lawyer's 12 hours must include at least 1 hour of ethics and at least 1 hour of professionalism and civility.

At least 6 of the 12 hours must be live verified CLE, and each lawyer subject to MCLE requirements files a Certificate of Compliance with the MCLE Board by July 31.

Utah does not allow carry-over credits.

Admission, CLE and paralegal rules change by court order, rule amendment and board policy, and this page is career information, not legal advice. Confirm every requirement with the admitting court, board of law examiners or CLE regulator before you apply, register for an exam or report credits. In Utah, that is the MCLE Board.

How many CLE hours does Utah require?

📜 Rule 1-604

Utah requires each active status lawyer admitted to practice in Utah to complete a minimum of 12 hours of accredited CLE during each compliance cycle.

The compliance cycle is one year, running July 1 through June 30, so the full 12 hours come due annually.

The rule also builds two minimums into the total — at least 1 hour of ethics and at least 1 hour of professionalism and civility — with at least 6 of the 12 hours required to be live verified CLE.

“Each active status lawyer admitted to practice in Utah must complete, during each Compliance Cycle, a minimum of 12 hours of Accredited CLE.”

What specialty credits are required (ethics, bias, wellness, tech)?

The specialty minimums our research confirmed are two: at least 1 hour of ethics and at least 1 hour of professionalism and civility, both inside the 12 annual hours.

The MCLE attorney FAQ pages we read list no separate bias, wellness or technology credit, so this page does not describe one.

Because credit categories can change, confirm the current list with the Board before you plan a compliance year around a specific credit type.

When is the Utah CLE deadline, and how do you report?

The compliance year ends June 30, and the reporting deadline follows one month later: on or before July 31 each year, each lawyer or licensed paralegal practitioner subject to MCLE requirements must file a Certificate of Compliance with the Board for the cycle that ended June 30.

Because licensed paralegal practitioners file the same certificate, a firm with both lawyers and LPPs runs one July compliance calendar.

The pages we read do not set out the filing mechanics — where the certificate is filed or in what form — so confirm the process with the Board.

“On or before July 31 each year, each lawyer or licensed paralegal practitioner subject to MCLE requirements must file a Certificate of Compliance with the Board”

What are the rules for newly admitted Utah attorneys?

This is a gap in our research.

We could not verify whether Utah sets specific CLE rules for newly admitted lawyers — a new-lawyer training program or mentoring requirement, for example — because the MCLE pages we captured did not settle the question, and a rule we could not verify is not a rule we will state.

That is not a finding that Utah has no newly admitted lawyer requirement: it means the Board is the place to ask before you plan your first compliance year.

Can you complete Utah CLE online or on demand?

Utah's rule splits the year in two.

At least 6 of the 12 hours must be live verified CLE, and the verified formats reach beyond the classroom: in-person attendance, remote group programs and verified e-CLE all qualify, so online coursework can sit inside the live half.

The other 6 hours can be self-study.

The FAQ pages we read do not define the self-study formats further, so confirm how a specific recorded or on-demand program is credited before you rely on it.

“At least 6 hours of the CLE must be Live "verified" CLE”

Do Utah CLE credits carry over, and who is exempt?

On carryover the rule is explicit: Utah does not allow carry-over credits from previous reporting periods, so hours above the 12-hour minimum do not roll into the next July-to-June cycle.

On exemptions our research found nothing to quote: the pages we read do not lay out who, if anyone, is exempt from the annual requirement by status, age or hardship.

An exemption question belongs with the Board.

“Utah does not allow carry-over credits from previous reporting periods.”

What happens if you miss the Utah CLE deadline?

This is the second gap in our research: the MCLE pages we captured do not describe what follows a late or missing Certificate of Compliance — no late fee, grace period, extension process or reinstatement rule appears in what we read, so none is stated here.

The fixed points this page can give you are the deadlines themselves: hours completed within the July 1-June 30 cycle and the certificate filed by July 31.

What missing that date triggers is a question for the Board.

Have Utah's CLE requirements changed recently?

The annual structure described on this page is current as of our October 2026 read of the Board's attorney FAQ pages: 12 hours per July-to-June cycle, reported by July 31.

If a CLE tracker, planning list or older article describes Utah's requirement as a multi-year cycle, treat it as out of date and re-check against the Board's current rules before you plan around it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Utah a one-year or two-year CLE state?

One year.

Utah's compliance cycle runs July 1 through June 30, and each active status lawyer completes a minimum of 12 hours of accredited CLE in it, including at least 1 hour of ethics and at least 1 hour of professionalism and civility.

The Certificate of Compliance is due July 31 for the cycle that ended June 30.

If a source describes Utah's requirement as a two-year cycle, treat it as out of date and confirm the current rule with the Board.

How many Utah CLE hours can be self-study?

Up to 6 of the 12 annual hours.

At least 6 must be live verified CLE — in person, remote group or verified e-CLE — and the other 6 can be self-study.

There is no carry-over in Utah, so self-study hours above the minimum do not bank toward the next cycle.

Confirm how a specific program is credited with the Board before you rely on it.

Do Utah CLE credits carry over to the next cycle?

No. Utah does not allow carry-over credits from previous reporting periods.

Each July-to-June cycle stands on its own: 12 hours completed in the cycle and reported on a Certificate of Compliance by July 31.

Hours you earn above the minimum stay in the cycle you earned them in.

Does Utah require bias, wellness or technology CLE?

Not that our research found.

The requirement we verified is 12 hours a year, including at least 1 hour of ethics and at least 1 hour of professionalism and civility; the MCLE FAQ pages we read list no separate bias, wellness or technology credit.

Credit categories can change, so confirm the current list with the Board before you plan a year around one.

Do Utah licensed paralegal practitioners have CLE obligations too?

Yes.

Utah lawyers and licensed paralegal practitioners (LPPs) alike are subject to MCLE requirements and file the same Certificate of Compliance with the Board by July 31 each year for the cycle that ended June 30, so the two groups run on the same annual compliance calendar.
