The Rhode Island Supreme Court regulates admission to the bar; applications run through the Supreme Court Clerk's Office under Article II of the Supreme Court Rules and the Board of Bar Examiners' rules.

Admission by examination means the Uniform Bar Exam at a scaled score of 270, plus an MPRE score of 80.

Rhode Island has no admission on motion; lawyers admitted elsewhere who skip the full exam use the Rule 1A attorney's exam or a transferred UBE score of 270 earned within 2 years of filing.

Who admits lawyers in Rhode Island?

📜 Rhode Island Supreme Court Rules, Article II

The Rhode Island Supreme Court regulates attorney admission.

The qualifications for admission are set out in Article II of the Supreme Court Rules for Admission of Attorneys and Others to Practice Law, applications go through the Supreme Court Clerk's Office, and the Board of Bar Examiners' rules govern the process.

NCBE develops the exams and scores the multiple-choice portions, but the individual jurisdictions administer the exam and grade the written portions.

Which bar exam does Rhode Island give?

📜 Rhode Island Supreme Court Rules, Article II, Rule 1

Rhode Island gives the Uniform Bar Exam: the Multistate Essay Examination, two Multistate Performance Test tasks and the Multistate Bar Examination, coordinated by NCBE.

The exam runs over two days — the MEE and MPT on the Tuesday, the MBE on the last Wednesday of February or July — and the three parts combine into one total score on a 400-point scale, weighted 50 percent MBE, 30 percent MEE and 20 percent MPT.

Rhode Island's minimum passing score is 270.

Each UBE jurisdiction's passing score applies both to examinees who tested there and to applicants transferring a score in, and Rhode Island's own transfer rule works from the same 270 floor.

Experienced lawyers admitted elsewhere have a shortened, essay-only option — Rhode Island's Rule 1A attorney's exam — covered below.

Who is eligible to sit for the Rhode Island bar?

Rhode Island writes its own eligibility rules: NCBE coordinates the exam, but UBE jurisdictions independently decide who may sit and be admitted and what legal education they require.

Our research did not capture Rhode Island's full eligibility rules for first-time applicants, such as what legal education it requires, so read the Supreme Court Clerk's Office instructions and the Board of Bar Examiners' rules before you apply.

The two routes that shorten or skip the exam do have set gates, covered below: Rule 1A requires at least 5 years admitted elsewhere with full-time practice in 5 of the last 10 years, and Rule 1B requires a UBE score of 270 or higher earned within 2 years of filing.

What MPRE score does Rhode Island require?

Rhode Island requires an MPRE scaled score of 80 or higher.

The MPRE is a two-hour, 60-question multiple-choice exam on the established standards of lawyer conduct, offered three times a year.

Scaled scores run from 50 to 150, and each jurisdiction sets its own passing score.

How does character and fitness work here?

Every jurisdiction runs a background (character and fitness) investigation as part of admission, and NCBE runs investigations for many of them — but NCBE makes no decisions: each jurisdiction decides who is fit to practice.

Rhode Island's application fee sits alongside NCBE processing or character report fees, and on the standardized character report form each jurisdiction decides which questions to ask and how the answers are evaluated.

NCBE increased its character report fees effective October 1, 2026, so check its current schedule for the amount.

Our research did not capture how the Board of Bar Examiners weighs individual issues or which Rhode Island routes use the NCBE report, so questions about a specific history belong with the Supreme Court Clerk's Office and the Board.

Can out-of-state lawyers waive into Rhode Island?

📜 Rhode Island Supreme Court Rules, Article II, Rules 1A and 1B

No. NCBE's listing for Rhode Island says its rules do not provide for admission on motion, so there is no waiver based on years of practice alone.

What Rhode Island offers experienced lawyers instead are two shortened routes.

Under Rule 1A, the attorney's exam, a lawyer admitted to the highest court of any state, district or territory for at least 5 years, with full-time practice in 5 of the last 10, sits only the essay portion of the Rhode Island bar exam — the MEE and MPT, no MBE — and needs a total scaled score of 135.

Under Rule 1B, Rhode Island accepts a transferred UBE score of 270 or higher if it was earned within 2 years of filing; NCBE's national table shows Rhode Island and North Dakota with the shortest transfer windows at 2 years, while most jurisdictions accept 3.

A transferred score does not skip character and fitness — each receiving jurisdiction runs its own review — and the same passing score applies to test-takers and transferees alike.

“Individuals may seek admission to this state’s bar by transfer of a Uniform Bar Examination score of 270 or higher earned on an administration of the Uniform Bar Examination which occurred within two (2) years of filing”

Pass rates, fees and results timing

All three routes cost the same: $975 covers the bar exam application under Rule 1, the attorney's exam under Rule 1A and a UBE score transfer under Rule 1B, with NCBE processing or character report fees on top.

There is no provision for late filing.

Filing windows for the regular exam run from October 1 to December 1 for the February exam and March 1 to May 1 for the July exam; Rule 1A attorney applicants file in earlier windows, July 1 to September 1 and December 1 to February 1.

Transfer applicants also pay NCBE's $30 fee for each official bar exam score transcript.

Our research did not establish a current Rhode Island pass rate or when results are released; check with the Supreme Court Clerk's Office for both.

“There is no provision for late filing.”

When does Rhode Island switch to the NextGen bar exam?

Rhode Island's last legacy UBE is February 2028 and its first NextGen UBE is July 2028; NCBE, which now calls the current exam the legacy UBE, schedules it through that February 2028 administration.

The NextGen UBE runs 9 hours over 1.5 days — two 3-hour sessions on day one, one 3-hour session on day two, though jurisdictions with local components may extend day two — and is taken on each examinee's own laptop at in-person, proctored testing sites.

It reports a single score on a 500–750 scale, and NCBE cautions that legacy scores on the 400-point scale and NextGen scores should not be compared directly.

Rhode Island's NextGen passing score and transfer policy were still listed as TBA on NCBE's adoption table as of September 25, 2026.

What happens after you are admitted to the Rhode Island bar?

📜 Rhode Island Supreme Court Rules, Article IV

Admission is not the last form.

Active Rhode Island lawyers pay a $200 annual registration fee to the Supreme Court between April 1 and July 1.

Admitted lawyers also carry continuing legal education obligations under the Supreme Court's MCLE rules: 10 hours each reporting year (July 1–June 30), at least 2 of them in legal ethics, per the Article IV text as revised April 2024.

Newly admitted lawyers are exempt from those hours for the current and next full reporting year, but they must take the one-day Rhode Island Bridge the Gap course by the end of their first full reporting year, unless they have been admitted elsewhere for 3 years.

A later amending order may exist, so confirm the current hours, deadline and exemptions with the court.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Rhode Island a UBE state?

Yes.

Rhode Island gives the Uniform Bar Exam and requires a score of 270, and it accepts transferred UBE scores of 270 or higher under its Rule 1B, as long as the score was earned within 2 years of filing.

It has no admission on motion; lawyers already licensed elsewhere who skip the full exam come in through a UBE score transfer or the Rule 1A attorney's exam.

Does Rhode Island have bar reciprocity with other states?

No. NCBE's listing for Rhode Island says its rules do not provide for admission on motion, so Rhode Island does not waive its exam for lawyers licensed elsewhere — even lawyers admitted elsewhere for at least 5 years still sit the essay portion under Rule 1A.

The routes that shorten or skip the exam are the Rule 1A attorney's exam — 5 years admitted elsewhere with full-time practice in 5 of the last 10 — or a transferred UBE score of 270 earned within 2 years of filing.

How much does the Rhode Island bar exam cost?

The application fee is $975, and Rhode Island charges the same for all three routes: the bar exam under Rule 1, the attorney's exam under Rule 1A and a UBE score transfer under Rule 1B.

NCBE processing or character report fees come on top — NCBE raised its character report fees effective October 1, 2026 — and there is no provision for late filing.

Transfer applicants also pay NCBE's $30 score transcript fee.

What is the Rhode Island bar exam pass rate?

Our research did not establish a current pass rate for the Rhode Island bar exam.

What the state's rules do set is the bar itself: a scaled score of 270 on the UBE, or 135 on the Rule 1A attorney's exam for experienced lawyers.

For results from recent administrations, check with the Rhode Island Supreme Court's Clerk's Office.

When does Rhode Island switch to the NextGen bar exam?

Rhode Island's last legacy UBE is scheduled for February 2028 and its first NextGen UBE for July 2028.

NCBE's adoption table still listed Rhode Island's NextGen passing score and transfer policy as TBA as of September 25, 2026, so applicants planning for the new exam should watch both the table and the Supreme Court Clerk's Office for the numbers.
